Matildas Abroad: frozen pitches halt matches but Kerr still red hot

Another weekend of Westfield Matildas abroad action saw the weather wreak havoc on fixtures.

Frozen pitches and icy temperatures meant there was no football for the Westfield Matildas in the Netherlands and a number of games were postponed in the FA WSL. While there was no football in France as the league had the week off before the international break.

England

Frozen pitches saw several games involving Westfield Matildas called off. Of the games that did go ahead midweek, Mackenzie Arnold and Emily van Egmond played full matches in a 1-0 loss to Brighton. West Ham has only picked up one point in its last four league games.

Sam Kerr came up against Lydia Williams with Chelsea taking bragging rights over Arsenal in this 3-0 London derby win. Steph Catley remains on the sideline for the Gunners while Caitlin Foord did not feature after a picking up a knock to her knee against Manchester City last week.

Chelsea had a quick turnaround, taking on Bristol this weekend but maintained their winning ways with a 5-0 victory.

Kerr added to her FA WSL tally with goal number 11 in the league. The Westfield Matildas striker was ever present up forward as goals to Pernille Harder, Fran Kirby, and Beth England rounded out the win.


This clash was a preview of the Conti Cup Final which is set to take place in a month at Vicarage Road in Watford.  

Everton earned a point against Reading with a 1-1 draw. The home side opened the scoring but Hayley Raso played a role in the visitor’s equaliser; teeing up Ingrid Moe Wold who provided the cross for Nicoline Sorensen to head home.


Spain

Aivi Luik’s Sevilla held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw. Madrid opened the scoring after a defensive error from Sevilla but they fought back and scored a looping header to earn a point.
