Matchweek 4 preview: Central Coast Mariners v Western Sydney Wanderers

Central Coast Mariners are the last remaining A-League team with a perfect record in 2020/21 and last year’s wooden spooners will aim shock the watching world once more against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday.

After finishing bottom of the pile for three straight years, Alen Stajcic’s side came out blazing in the new campaign, racing to a 2-1 win over F3 Derby rivals, the Newcastle Jets, before crashing the party of competition newcomers Macarthur FC, 2-0, in the Bulls’ inaugural home game.

Tuesday opponents, Western Sydney Wanderers have claimed four points from their three matches this season. Their only win arrived in a 2-1 triumph against the Jets in the Hunter, where ex-Mariner Ziggy Gordon scored his first A-League goal following his departure from Gosford in the off-season.

Carl Robinson’s team are seeking to build on their 1-1 draw in the Sydney Derby against Harbour City rivals Sydney FC on Saturday, but the visitors come up against a Mariners side high on confidence and possibly with the addition of Costa Rica’s FIFA World Cup star Marcos Ureña, who is now out of quarantine, although the hosts have not played since January 3.
