2010 Asian Cup Rewind: Westfield Matildas progress to knockout phase with 3-1 victory over Korea Repubic

The Westfield Matildas continued their winning ways at the 2010 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, this time with a 3-1 win against the Korea Republic.

Head Coach Tom Sermanni made nine changes to the starting side to ensure Australia could qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

The decision proved successful with new starters Kim Carroll and Lisa De Vanna scoring for the Westfield Matildas’.

It was a quiet first half from both sides that saw neither able to find an opener.  Group leaders Australia looked the stronger side but were not able to convert their chances.

Korea were faced with the first opportunity in the opening minutes as they were awarded with succession of corners, one in particular landing in the space of Kwon Hah Nul, who sent her header just too high of the top bar.

A collection of chances from Heather Garriock, and Kate Gill went astray with De Vanna causing havoc amongst the Korean backline as she continued to find opportunities for her teammates.

After the break, Elise Kellond-Knight gave Korea’s keeper Kim Jung-mi a taste of what the Westfield Matildas’ were about to initiate in the sixth minute of the second half, as she forced Kim to tip her shot over the crossbar.

The corner to follow by Garriock landed in the path of Carroll, who volleyed home at the back post, opening the scoring for Australia.

Australia were able to double their lead not even ten minutes later through De Vanna.  The speedy striker was first blocked by Kim before her follow up attempt found an open net.

It then took only six further minutes for the Westfield Matildas’ third, delivered by youngster Sam Kerr.

Second after being substituted to replace De Vanna, the sixteen-year old found her way onto a loose ball and the back of the net.

The goal was the teen’s first for Australia and her two substitute appearances for the Westfield Matildas has coach Sermanni considering whether a position in the starting XI could be close for Kerr.

“There’s a pretty good chance she could start in the next game. She’s a young, enthusiastic sixteen-year-old without any fear,” he said.

Korea successfully began their battle to level up with Australia in the 70th minute as Kang Sun Mi sent her header over Melissa Barbieri, however, still leaving them at a 1-3 disadvantage.

The intense 15 minutes displayed by Australia was enough to secure the side their second win in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, a sequence of play Sermanni acknowledged as the winning moment.

The tactics we tried to put into the place the players followed perfectly.”

“We were fortunate to get three goals very quickly in the second half and that probably finished the game as it would have been difficult for Korea to come back from that.”
