Match preview: Westfield Matildas v Chile

The onus is on the Westfield Matildas to rebound from a surprise defeat when they meet a buoyant Chile side in Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Chile defied the weight of possession to snatch a clinical counter-attacking 3-2 victory in an entertaining clash at Panthers Stadium over the weekend.

It was the sign of a team very much on the up, but the Westfield Matildas remain a quality outfit with threats all over the pitch and will be itching to make a statement as the two-match Seven International Consulting Series concludes.

Here's all you need to know ahead of the rematch!

FORM

Australia are tasked with snapping a three-game winless streak following the Penrith upset.

A defeat to France and draw with England during last month's tour of Europe add to a sense of urgency for Alen Stajcic's side to restore form.

Meanwhile, Chile now boast two wins from their past five fixtures.

That run has included two defeats to the United States and both a win and a draw against South Africa.

WESTFIELD MATILDAS SQUAD NEWS

One positive from Saturday's match was that no fresh injruy concerns arose for Australia.

Newcastle Jets defender Gema Simon will hope for an opportunity in her home town after receiving a late call-up as club team-mate Larissa Crummer's replacement last week.

Alanna Kennedy also looms as an option at the back after returning to the international arena via the bench last time out.

Attacking trio Alex Chidiac, Michelle Heyman and Princess Ibini are all likely to be considered for minutes after going unused in the first game.

FINAL WORD

Pre-match talk from the Westfield Matildas camp has been about sticking to the team's established ethos following Saturday's loss.

Stajcic is confident the team remains on the right path and a win in Newcastle would replenish confidence at an important time.

Boisterous backing should aid those chances.

An excellent crowd of 16,829 people packed into McDonald Jones Stadium when the Westfield Matildas arrived and put three past Brazil in September 2017.

That was a record attendance for the national team on home soil, although it could well be beaten on Tuesday night.

One thing is for certain: Chile certainly have the quality to contribute to another top contest.
