Mat Ryan named PFA Men’s Footballer of the Year

For the second year running, Socceroos & Brighton & Hove goalkeeper Maty Ryan has been awarded the PFA Men’s Footballer of the Year.

The award celebrates and rewards Australia’s most outstanding male players each season, based on the principle of peer recognition.

This is Ryan’s third PFA Award after he staved off competition from fellow Socceroos Aaron Mooy and Awer Mabil to take out the prestigious accolade.

He was an ever-present in Brighton’s line-up, playing every minute of Premier League football over the course of the 2019/20 season as his side steered clear of relegation and finished in 15th place.

He collected nine cleansheets and helped his side to their equal best finish in an EPL campaign which was two places and five points better off than their previous season.

The Socceroos shot stopper also captained the green and gold in vital 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying wins over Taiwan and Jordan.

He was delighted to receive the award and honoured that his fellow colleagues selected him as the winner for the second consecutive year.

“It’s always the most prestigious one when you’re voted by fellow colleagues, you’re rubbing shoulders with; for them to acknowledge and recognise your contribution to Australian football, it’s a very humbling feeling,” Ryan said.
