Melbourne Victory's finals hopes have been dealt a major blow with news that skipper Adrian Leijer will miss the remainder of the season with a hip injury.

Melbourne Victory's finals hopes have been dealt a major blow with news that skipper Adrian Leijer will miss the remainder of the season with a hip injury.

The central defender has been unable to train of late because of soreness in his pelvic region, but has managed to push through the pain barrier on game day.

Leijer could have continued to play in pain, but the club decided to allow the 25-year-old to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left hip in an attempt to get him fully fit for next season.

Victory currently sit five points outside the top six with just five matches remaining.
