While De Jong will have his sights set on creating history with Sydney FC, it's not the first time he's crossed paths with the Sky Blues.

De Jong came up against Sydney FC in Newcastle United's pre-season tour of New Zealand in 2014.

He was pitted against current Sky Blues skipper Alex Brosque in that match, and opened the scoring from long range after capitalising on an Ivan Necevski error at the back.

Wellington Phoenix's Steven Taylor was also on the pitch that day for the Premier League side, as Newcastle ran out 4-0 victors.

The former Newcastle United duo are now set to clash as enemies in the Hyundai A-League this season.
