Kerr named in top 10 at prestigious Ballon d’Or awards

Westfield Matildas skipper Sam Kerr has finished seventh at the prestigious Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris on Tuesday morning (AEDT).

United States star Megan Rapinoe took out the women’s award for a remarkable 2019, which included lading her country to World Cup glory in France.

Rapinoe won the Golden Boot at the tournament for her six goals, one more than Australian superstar Kerr.

"It's absolutely incredible, congrats to the other nominees. I can't believe I'm the one winning in this field, it's been an incredible year," said Rapinoe, who was not at the ceremony, in a recorded message.

Kerr, who recently signed with English Women’s Super League club Chelsea, was named on a 20-player shortlist for the award in October.

She made the final 10 nominees, with Rapinoe eventually coming out on top ahead of England international Lucy Bronze and American attacker Alex Morgan.

It’s just the second year a Ballon d’Or has been awarded to women, with Norway’s Ada Hegerberg – who was fourth this year - winning in 2018.

Kerr came in at seventh in the final standings, also behind Arsenal's Dutch star Vivianne Miedema and Frenchwoman Wendie Renard.

The 26-year-old enjoyed another incredible 2019, winning a third straight Golden Boot award in the NWSL for her record-breaking tally of 19 goals for the Chicago Red Stars.

She also helped Perth Glory finish last season’s Westfield W-League as runners-up, scoring 17 goals for the campaign.
