Kerr, Carpenter take leads into UWCL quarter final second legs

A Sam Kerr goal and assist capped off a Chelsea win, while the all French battle saw Lyon take the lead in these quarter final clashes.

Matildas v Germany - Thin Banner

The first leg of the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter finals were full of drama. Both of the Westfield Matildas involved in the competition - Kerr at Chelsea and Ellie Carpenter at Lyon - saw their sides earn victories heading into the second legs next week.

Chelsea's clash with Wolfsburg saw the German side show off their pedigree with chance after chance. Ann-Katrin Berger in the Blues' goal made multiple saves to keep last year's finalists at bay.

But it was Chelsea and Kerr who would find the back of the net first. A swift move across the pitch saw Ji So-yun find Fran Kirby. Her turn and pass met the oncoming Kerr who was taken to the by-line but finished coolly.

Pernille Harder doubled the Blues' lead with a smart finish against her former side, courtesy of a Kerr assist. Wolfsburg scored a vital away goal with Dominique Janssen beating Berger from the spot.

Lyon earned a 1-0 away victory against rivals PSG thanks to a Wendie Renard penalty.

Both sides attacked ferociously with Sarah Bouhaddi and Christiane Endler being called on to keep their sides in the match.

It took until the 86th minute for the deadlock to be broken with a handball given against PSG and the Lyon captain making no mistake from 12 yards.

In the other quarter finals, Barcelona were 3-0 winners over Manchester City while Bayern Munich put three past Rosengard.

The second legs commence Wednesday night Australian time.
