Kerr a cut above the rest as Glory eye silverware

One night, two goals, two records for the Westfield Matildas star.

Sam Kerr is the all-time leading goalscorer in Westfield W-League after netting a double in a 5-1 demolition job against the Western Sydney Warriors at Marconi Stadium, Perth Glory’s first win away from home in the Westfield W-League 2018/19 Season.

Her extraordinary tally of 65 goals across 10 seasons bests Adelaide United’s Michelle Heyman (63) and Melbourne City’s Tameka Butt (51).

The 25-year-old also became the player with the most goals for any single club in the league, Kerr’s 52 strikes for Perth again eclipsing Heyman’s 51 goals for Canberra United.

Astonishingly, the Westfield Matildas star is also the all-time leading goalscorer in the NWSL, the United States’ premier women’s competition, with 55 goals.

The records are a testament to Kerr’s consistency and temperament when the goals are harder to come by, and it showed in the Perth native's post-match interview.

“I’m feeling good, I think the fact that we won was really nice,” said Kerr.

“I‘m just lucky I have some really awesome teammates because I didn’t have my best on today.”

Alexia Moreno one such player who was brilliant for Perth, netting a thunderous opener for the visitors in her starting debut for the club.

Despite Leena Khamis’ equaliser for the Wanderers, Katie Naughton, Kerr and Hill piled goals and misery on the league’s bottom-placed side.

It was an emphatic victory for the Glory, who have usurped first position on the ladder from Melbourne Victory on goal difference, albeit having played two matches more.

This intensifies the race to the Westfield W-League 2018/19 Finals Series, as well as the battle for the Premiers Plate.

In truly unprecedented fashion, six teams remain in contention for the Premiers Plate, and seven sides can still sneak into that coveted final four.

Bobby Despotovski’s outfit will be satisfied following tonight’s result, knowing that only a remarkable set of results could remove his team from finals calculations.

And with a mouth-watering clash against the second-placed Victory to be played in a week’s time, the Glory have a genuine chance at finishing the season on a high.
