Kantarovski, Petratos fire Jets to season-ending win over Sydney FC

Newcastle Jets finished their season on a high with a clinical 2-0 victory over second-placed Sydney FC at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night.

Ben Kantarovski and Dimitri Petratos struck either side of half-time to secure the Jets – destined to stay seventh regardless of the result – just their second win in 19 attempts against the Sky Blues.

Steve Corica's side, who host a Semi Final in just over a fortnight, will hope to regain form when they visit Ulsan Hyundai in the AFC Champions League on May 7.

Both sides were restricted to half-chances and speculative shots until an unlikely figure ended the impasse in the 41st minute.

Andrew Redmayne came and failed to claim a Dimitri Petratos corner, which deflected off Nikolai Topor-Stanley and dropped for midfielder Kantarovski to sweep home.

The Jets carried the momentum into the second half as Roy O'Donovan tested Redmayne with a stinging effort, before Petratos doubled the margin.

It was another moment to forget for the Sky Blues gloveman, who succeeded only in turning a cut-back from the overlapping Lachlan Jackson into the path of a grateful Petratos at the far post.

Moss then moved well to parry a thumping Josh Brillante attempt and had to be alert to cut out Jacob Tratt's cut-back from the byline on the hour.

Reza Ghoochannejhad went even closer moments later, the striker hitting the side-netting after being played in by Daniel De Silva.

Sydney FC's frustrating night soured further when Rhyan Grant headed for the bench while clutching his hamstring in the 74th minute.

Moss continued to repel the visitors for the remainder of the match as the runners-up to table-topping Perth Glory were held goalless in their final Hyundai A-League hit-out before the Finals Series.
