The Joeys have responded from the disappointment of losing their semi-final at the AFF U-16 AYA Bank Championship in Myanmar to take third in the tournament against Vietnam.

In a match where the teams had to again be separated from the spot Australia prevailed 7-6, after the two nations played out a goalless draw at the end of regulation time.

Despite the Aussies dominating the match, they were unable to penetrate a resolute Vietnam defence. The Joeys had strong claims for a spot-kick denied in the 86th minute and with no extra-time the match went straight to penalties.

Joeys Jamie Dimitroff, Kosta Petratos, Jackson Bandiera, Joe Caletti, Daniel Maskins, Nicholas Panetta and Perikles Fotakopoulos were all successful from the spot, as the side took third.

The tournament was Australia-s first participation in Asia following last month's admission as a full member to the ASEAN Football Federation.

Meanwhile Malaysia were crowned AFF U-16 AYA Bank Champions as they downed Indonesia in a match that also had to be decided on penalties, to claim their maiden title.

The sides were locked 1-1 at full time after Malaysia were fortunate to equalise having been awarded a penalty in the fourth minute of injury time. Malaysia going on to take the final 3-2 from the spot.
