The Joeys have gone down on penalties to Indonesia at the semi-final stage of the AFF U-16 AYA Bank Championship in Myanmar.

The Australian-s held the lead twice in the match but couldn't hold on as the game ended 2-2.

The game eventually went to penalties where the Indonesians made no mistake as they won 5-4.

Australia opened the scoring in the 31st minute when some brilliant work from Daniel Maskin down the left hand side saw him beat two defenders before setting up Jamal Reiners for a tap-in to give the Joeys a 1-0 lead that they would keep as the sides went to the half time break.

Gatot Wahyudi got the Indonesians level when he scored in the 56th minute before Kosta Petratos gave the Aussies back the lead on 67 minutes.

Petratos hit a brilliant free kick from just outside the box into the top right hand corner to give the goalkeeper no chance.

They couldn't hold on however as Reska Maulana mimicked Petratos's expertise at the other end as he lifted the ball over the wall and into the back of the net from a free-kick to get his side back to 2-2 with ten minutes remaining.

Neither side could get a winner in the final minutes and with no extra time the match went to penalties.

After Petratos converted the first for Australia, Reiners missed the second penalty, the only miss of the ten shots taken as the Indonesians booked their spot in the final.

The Joeys will now play Vietnam in the 3rd/4th place playoffs while Indonesia will take on Malaysia in the final.
