Jack Hughes

An outstanding striker from Northern NSW, Jack Hughes made his name in the years before World War II. Known as "Bully" Hughes, he started football with West Wallsend and progressed as a striker before the depression years forced a move to the strong Metters club in Sydney. His strong performances didn’t go unnoticed, eventually leading to national selection. Hughes made his international debut against New Zealand in 1933 where he scored the last goal in Australia's 6-4 win. He went on to play 25 matches for Australia, 10 of which were A internationals, and scored 16 goals. Hughes also played against England (1937), India (1938) and Palestine (1938). During the first Test against English Amateurs at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Hughes stirred the 45,000-strong crowd by scoring 10 seconds after kick-off, leading Australia to a 5-4 win.
