'It's something I'm proud of': Grant set for Sydney FC milestone

There’s a nice bit of symmetry for Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant in Friday night’s Hyundai A-League clash against Perth Glory.

The clash at nib Stadium will mark 10 years to the day since a 17-year-old Grant made his Hyundai A-League debut for the Sky Blues against the Glory at Allianz Stadium.

It will be a special occasion for the dashing right-back, who will become Sydney FC’s first 10-year player.

“It’s a pretty big honour and something I’m proud of,” Grant told reporters on Wednesday.

“We’ve had a couple of successful years the last couple so that’s gone by pretty quick but then again I feel like I’ve been here for a long time.

“I’ve had a few injuries which has made some of the years drag on a little bit but all in all it’s gone pretty quick.”

Grant has seen plenty of highs and lows in his time at the club, from being a key part of two Championship wins, the Premierships and an FFA Cup triumph, to his recovery from two serious knee injuries.

But all those experiences have made the Canowindra junior the player he is today, which is one of Sydney FC’s most important players and a Caltex Socceroo.

While it’s a significant milestone for Grant, all he really wants on Friday night is three points to close the gap to the league-leading Glory.

“It’s a super important game. We want to win every game and that hasn’t changed in the 10 years I’ve been at the club,” the 27-year-old said.

“It’s going to be a good fight for us, and it’s something we’re looking forward to.

“They [Glory] have been going pretty well, they are unbeaten so it will be difficult. But it’s something we’re keen on and we’re quietly confident we can go there and get the three points."

And history suggests Grant could be right with the Sky Blues winning their last eight games in a row against the Glory, scoring 29 goals in that time.

Sydney FC are also unbeaten in their last six trips to nib Stadium.
