'It’s a dream come true': Westfield Matildas stars reflect on unique new jersey

Westfield Matildas stars have praised their new kit ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019, saying it reflects what the side is all about.

The specially designed Westfield Matildas kit features a blend of urban styles with a classic Australian green and wattle colour scheme, all mixed together in a throwback to Aussie kits of the 1990s.

Representing the playing group at the Nike kit launch were skipper Sam Kerr, midfielder Emily van Egmond, and forwards Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso.

Kerr said the new kit was something she and the team had been looking forward to for a long time.

“It’s a dream come true to be honest,” Kerr said.

“This is something we’ve wanted for ages and I think it represents our team pretty well, what the public sees of us and how we think of ourselves as out there and a bold team.

“I think it represents us pretty well, so we’re all super excited about it.”

Foord echoed her captain’s sentiments, praising the kit for its take on the unique Westfield Matildas’ style.

“It does reflect our team,” Foord said. “As you all know it’s a very young team and I think the kit is very fun and that’s something that is massive within our team.

“We are always having fun and it is out there and we all have our own personalities and I think that definitely shows that.”

Van Egmond, a member of the Australian international set-up since 2010, said it was important for the side to have its own brand reflected in their jersey.

“It’s super fun and obviously very out there,” Van Egmond told matildas.com.au.

“It’s super exciting and I think the fans are going to really enjoy it. I know the girls are just buzzing to put it on and wear it.

“It’s something we’ve been really excited about for a very long time and to be able to now step out in our own brand is awesome. I definitely think it really reflects our team.

“We have a lot of different personalities, it’s super bold, it’s fresh, it’s fun and I think you definitely see that within our team.”

The jersey features the traditional Westfield Matildas slogan of ‘Never Say Die’ on the inside of the collar.

Raso said having a physical reminder of their mantra on them at all times was special.

“It means a lot to us,” Raso said.

“Having it on the inside of our jersey, knowing that we’re stepping out with it right there with us.

“This saying goes back long before a lot of us were in the team and it’s just about the 'never give up' attitude, so basically whether we’re winning or losing, if it’s the 10th minute or the 90th minute, we have that attitude to never give up.”

The new Westfield Matildas kit is available in women’s, men's and kids' sizes from 12 March via the FFA Online Store. Click here to buy yours now.
