Impressive City hold off Adelaide as Brattan tees up

Melbourne City leapfrogged Adelaide United into fourth spot on the Hyundai A-League ladder after clinching a 2-0 win in South Australia.

Jordan Elsey’s first half own goal saw City take the lead against the run of play, but Warren Joyce’s side seized the initiative in a crucial 25-minute period and doubled their lead early in the second courtesy of Luke Brattan’s strike.

Adelaide struggled for impetus and direction at home, with Craig Goodwin guilty of squandering good scoring opportunities in each half.

The victory is City’s first outside of Melbourne for five games, and one that extends the side’s unbeaten streak against the Reds to five.

Ritchie De Laet hobbled off injured early on as Warren Joyce’s visitors found themselves under siege.

But City were rewarded for their resilience when Riley McGree’s cutback struck Elsey and looped over Reds goalkeeper Paul Izzo.

Goodwin squandered a great chance to equalise on the cusp of the interval. The Reds’ attacker rose unchallenged in the penalty area but headed Michael Marrone’s delivery wide of the post.

Elsey’s day went from bad to worse early in the second. Adelaide’s towering defender lost possession on the edge of the box and was swiftly made to pay when Dario Vidosic teed up Brattan, whose clean hit squirmed underneath Izzo.

Goodwin fired over the bar when he might’ve picked out a teammate and Eugene Galekovic pulled off a stunning save from Scott Galloway as Adelaide rallied, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Reds’ third defeat of the campaign.
