Broxham on track for 400?

It was a memorable weekend for Melbourne Victory stalwart Leigh Broxham, who had a couple of reasons to celebrate on Friday night.

Not only did Victory kick-start their season with a much-needed 1-0 win over Perth Glory but Broxham became just the second player to reach the 300-game mark in the Hyundai A-League.

Making his achievement even more impressive was the fact he has done it all at the same club.

Ex-teammate Archie Thompson admits he never thought Broxham would have as big of a career as he has, but now thinks he can set even more records in the future.

“I remember when he came to Victory he was the kit man in [2005], he had this bomb car and we weren’t sure if we were going to get the kit some weeks,” Broxham’s former teammate Archie Thompson said on Fox Sports.

“If you asked me 10 years ago if Broxham would be a cult hero and would play 300 games I would have said ‘no way, your barking mad'.

“I think he’s getting better and better. If he keeps playing the way he is and he’s so versatile…I can see him reaching the 400 mark very easy.”

Merrick reveals a new assistant

Newcastle Jets have had to make do without influential skipper Nigel Boogaard on the pitch in recent weeks as he battles a groin injury.

But the 33-year-old is still playing a key role at the club, as coach Ernie Merrick revealed after Saturday night’s win over Western Sydney Wanderers.

Asked how far away Boogaard was returning to the pitch, Merrick said: “He hasn’t got through a training session yet.

“But I bring him on the bench because if I really needed him I could bring him on but it would be a really high risk with his groin injury.

“He’s really there because he’s such a knowledgeable player and an influential player with the other boys in the team.

“He makes really good points at half time and I give him freedom to make comments to me about certain positions etc. He’s a leader and a coach. He’s very good.”

Celebrations getting ‘weird’

Nikola Mileusnic provided one of the highlights of the weekend with his stunning goal against Wellington Phoenix.

The Adelaide United flyer received the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box, controlled it with his chest before slicing a volley with his non-preferred foot into the top corner.

It was an early contender for Goal of the Season but his celebration may be just as memorable.

After planting the ball in the top corner, Mileusnic then skipped away, raising alternate arms and legs before teammates came and swamped him.

"I'm not sure about that celebration. There's some weird celebrations going around these days,” said former Reds defender Robbie Cornthwaite in commentary on Fox Sports.
