'He'll put the next one away': Roar interim coach backs Taggart

Brisbane Roar interim coach Darren Davies has backed Adam Taggart to convert his next Hyundai A-League penalty after the striker’s miss from the spot proved crucial on Saturday evening.

Sydney FC beat the Roar 2-1 in Kogarah but Taggart could have equalised with just five minutes left if he had have converted from 12 yards.

Goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne saved Taggart’s effort, though, meaning Adam Le Fondre’s brace was enough to secure all three points for the Sky Blues.

Taggart was a major signing for the Roar in the off-season and has netted six goals already in this campaign, form that should mean he is cut some slack, according to Davies.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant this season,” Davies said.

“What he’s given, the goals he has scored, the penalties he has scored … he’ll put the next one away.”

Davies stepped in to replace the Roar’s longest-serving coach, John Aloisi, who resigned on the eve of the clash in Kogarah.

The former Wales Under-21 international - also an ex-Melbourne Victory assistant - spoke of how the Roar’s playing group were “very fond” of Aloisi and travelled to Sydney in a “very sombre” frame of mind.

But Davies was pleased with the way the Roar showed spirit during the clash.

“The boys showed tremendous fight, tremendous spirit,” he said.

“We’ve come to a team who are going to be there or thereabouts and they’re clinging on at the end … we were pushing for the equaliser.”

The Roar have lost five Hyundai A-League matches in a row and have a quick turnaround, taking on Newcastle Jets on Wednesday evening.
