Australia is a melting pot of different cultural influences and our Westfield Matildas, Young Matildas and Junior Matildas are no different as they have drawn strength from our rich society to mix it on the world stage.
Harmony Day, held annually on March 21, celebrates Australia’s of cultural diversity. It is a day which embraces inclusivity, and looks to recognise and celebrate the many nations and cultures that make Australia rich and vibrant every single day.
Since 1978, the Westfield Matildas, Young Matildas and Juniror Matildas has been home to players born across a number of different nations but all sharing in the passion to unite under the green and gold of Australia.

From captain Sam Kerr, who has Indian heritage, to Karly Roestbakken with Norwegian heritage and Young Matildas Princess Ibini (Nigeria) and Susan Phongsongkham (Thailand), Westfield Matildas sides at all ages levels have included players either born in or with ethnic backgrounds from over 12 different nations across the team’s history, encompassing Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.
In recent years, the ever-growing support and opportunities for elite women’s football means our Australian-born talents are now delighting football fans all over the world.
Sam Kerr is now lighting up the highlight reels for Chelsea in England, alongside Caitlin Foord (Arsenal), Chloe Logarzo (Bristol City) and Hayley Raso (Everton) - with the quartet all previously shining bright in the United States.
Karly Roestbakken (LSK Kvinner) and Tameka Yallop (Klepp IL) are tackling competition in Norway, as are Clare Polkinghorne and Katrina Gorry, who have teamed up again at Avaldsnes.
Elsewhere in Europe it is the same story – be it in Germany where Emily Gielnik lines up for Bayern Munch, or Italy where Lisa De Vanna wears the purple of Fiorentina, or France where Mary Fowler is showcasing her skills for Montpellier.
Like Australia, the Westfield Matildas - past and present - are drawn from and giving back to a wide football world.
