Hard taskmaster Kurz eyes more Adelaide improvement

Adelaide United coach Marco Kurz was not letting the result cloud his thoughts after his side’s 3-1 win at Wellington Phoenix on Sunday.

United came from behind to win in New Zealand, with a Thomas Doyle own goal on the stroke of half-time levelling proceedings.

Ken Ilso then scored twice in the second half as United made it back-to-back road wins.

But Kurz was unhappy with his side’s start to the match and said he needed to make several adjustments at the break to help Adelaide to victory in rebel Female Football Round.

“We are happy with the result but we are not happy with the first 30 minutes,” he said afterwards.

“We weren’t good enough in the game and I thought in the first 30 minutes, it will be a hard game for us.

“In the half-time, we did some corrections or some new information for the players and the second half we did it well.

“It’s always good to win away and it’s good to win in Wellington because it’s not so easy to win here.”

Kurz said his half-time team talk was all about making sure Adelaide did “little things” and “basics in the football” right.

“To be active, not to stay passive, to ask and move for the ball, to play firmer passes,” he said when asked about what were his key messages.

All three of United’s goals came from crosses and that aspect did at least please Kurz, who acknowledged his side were “hard to defend” when they got things right on the break.

Wellington boss Mark Rudan said conceding just before half-time really impacted on his players.

“We were looking pretty cosy in the first half,” he said.

“I thought all the things that we worked on in the last couple of weeks, nullifying their threats, was working well.

“[Conceding] just before the break, it really dampened the spirits of the players.

“We tried to pick them back up and tell them to keep going - the game was still at 1-1.

"Just after half time, we sort of go to sleep and [concede again and] you’re playing catch up.”

Adding to Rudan’s frustration was the way Adelaide scored their goals, given Wellington’s work in recent weeks.

“We work on defending crosses quite a bit. We know that Adelaide like to get the ball over in certain areas, or crosses from certain pockets and certain areas,” he said.

“It’s not like we didn’t work on them. We worked on them. We have to be better. We just need to keep working harder at it.”
