'Good time' to play Sydney FC, says Baccus

Melbourne City midfielder Kearyn Baccus believes Friday is “a good time” to face Sydney FC after the club’s FFA Cup Final heartbreak.

The Sky Blues backed up from a Sydney Derby on Saturday night and played 90 frenetic minutes at Coopers Stadium on Tuesday as Adelaide United won the FFA Cup Final 2018 by a 2-1 scoreline.

With almost a full week to prepare for Friday evening’s clash at AAMI Park, Baccus believes City have got the better end of the stick.

“I think now, especially, with FFA Cup and all that, I think it’d be a good time to do something while they’re a little bit, you know, a little bit tired or fatigued,” Baccus said.

“I reckon we could get a result.”

Baccus only joined Melbourne City last month on a short-term injury replacement deal.

An injury to Michael O'Halloran forced City’s hand and they were pleased to sign a midfielder of Baccus’ quality just weeks before the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 Season begun.

Baccus has good knowledge of Sydney FC, having spent four seasons at the club’s cross-town rivals, Western Sydney Wanderers, but said things are different this season.

“Sydney, you know, every year they’re a good team … [but] they look a little bit different under [Steve] Corica compared to Graham Arnold," he said.

Baccus’ City teammate, Riley McGee, backed the club’s forwards to find their shooting boots after a profligate display against the Central Coast Mariners in Round 2.

Despite having 23 shots on goal to Central Coast’s four, City could only claim a 1-1 draw - and they needed an 84th-minute equaliser from Dario Vidosic to do so.

When asked what needed improvement, McGree simply said: "Composure”.

“We’ve obviously got finishers in the team. People who can score,” he added.

“Obviously Bruno [Fornaroli] can score many goals and he’s shown that most seasons … once he starts scoring one, he’ll start scoring more.

“I think our team is capable.”
