Friday night preview: Macarthur FC v Wellington Phoenix – June 4

Macarthur FC will have all eyes on a return to Campbelltown Stadium in the A-League Finals Series but the Bulls must overcome the Wellington Phoenix on Friday to boost their chances of a top-four finish.

Having already sealed their post-season spot, Ante Milicic’s side need three points against the New Zealand outfit to give themselves a chance of marking their inaugural season with an Elimination Final showdown back on their own turf.

A win for the competition newcomers in Matchweek 24 would leave them needing either Brisbane Roar or the Central Coast Mariners to drop points to clinch a third or fourth placed finish as they strive to make their maiden campaign one to remember.

This match could be a Campbelltown farewell to captain Mark Milligan, who has announced he will retire following the culmination of the season and take his place in the back-room team of the start-up club, and the 80-cap Socceroo will no doubt be desperate to book one more history-making outing in front of his home fans.

Macarthur could finish anywhere between third and sixth based on the weekend’s results – a enviable position in the eyes of Ufuk Talay’s Phoenix side, who narrowly missed out on a place in the top six despite a turbulent season filled with disruption and uncertainly based in Wollongong due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Kiwi club’s fate was sealed when Adelaide locked up the last finals berth with a 2-2 draw against Western Sydney Wanderers on Thursday – but how things could be different if Ulises Davila had scored a last-minute winner from the penalty spot against Perth Glory last weekend. The Mexican marvel is set to play his final game in a Phoenix jersey before an expected switch to the Bulls for the 2021/22 campaign.
