Four Wanderers in ACL Dream Team

Four Western Sydney Wanderers FC stars have been named in the AFC Champions League 2014 Dream Team, alongside disgraced Al Hilal striker Nasser Al-Shamrani.

Goal-keeping hero Ante Covic, skipper Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Shannon Cole were all named in the starting XI while striker Tomi Juric was selected as one of six substitutes.

The quartet were rewarded for helping the Hyundai A-League club complete  an historic and remarkable ACL title triumph with a win of Saudi giants Al Hilal earlier over two legs.

But it’s the selection of Al-Shamrani that has caused the biggest stir given his appalling behavior at the end of the final.

The Saudi international was caught by TV cameras caught spitting at Wanderers defender Matthew Spiranovic after the full-time whistle of the second leg in Riyadh.

A potential brawl was just about avoided despite, Al Shamrani following up his disgusting transgression by charging at Spiranovic and attempting a head-but at Juric.

Al-Shamrani has will learn what punishment he gets when a disciplinary committee meets on November 28.

Despite defeat in the final, Al Hilal actually boast the most players in the starting side (four) with Al Shamrani, who scored 10 goals in the competition, joined by playmaker Thiago Neves, Abdullah Al Zori and Kwak Tae-Hwi.

Al Ain, beaten by Al Hilal in the semi-finals, have two representatives in the shape of UAE playmaker Omar Abdulrahman and Asamoah Gyan, who finished as the competition's top scorer with 12 goals from as many games.

Other players to make the team included Al Sadd's Algerian international Nadir Belhadj and Guangzhou Evergrande's Brazilian import Elkeson.

The Wanderers continued their celebrations from their title triumph with a Civic reception in Parramatta on Monday night, with a huge crowd again turning out to show their appreciation to Tony Popovic’s side.

The side, who have lost all three of their Hyundai A-League matches this season, next take on the Glory in Perth on Saturday night.
