Former Socceroo appointed Newcastle Olympic head coach

Former Socceroo and Hyundai A-League Championship winner, Joel Griffiths, has made his first foray into coaching after being announced as Head Coach of Northern NSW NPL club Newcastle Olympic.

Griffiths, 40, retired from playing in 2019 after a 22-year career, which saw him play in Switzerland, England, Japan, and China, as well as the Hyundai A-League, National Soccer League and Northern NSW NPL in Australia.

He received the highest individual honour in Australian football in 2007-08, winning the Johnny Warren medal for best Hyundai A-League Player of the Season in Newcastle Jets' Championship-winning side.

Griffiths joins Olympic as head coach ahead of the 2021 NNSW NPL season.

"Having played previously in the NPL Northern NSW, Joel will no doubt bring his years of experience gained playing at the highest level into the local competition as the Head Coach of Olympic," an Olympic Facebook post read.
