Fairy tale NPL NSW season ends in defeat for FFA Cup Quarter Finallists APIA Leichhardt

The fairy tale NPL NSW season of APIA Leichhardt has come to an end.

Billy McColl's FFA Cup 2018 Quarter Finalists were beaten 3-1 by Sydney Olympic in the NPL NSW Grand Final on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, fellow Quarter Finalists Avondale prevailed in their elimination final clash in Victoria.

New South Wales

Sydney Olympic claimed a historic National Premier Leagues NSW premiership and championship double with an Alex Sanchez brace helping them to an emphatic 3-1 win against APIA Leichhardt Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.

The win is Olympic’s first grand final win since 2011, when they also claimed the premiership and championship double, while for APIA it was their second consecutive grand final defeat.

Led by their Spanish striker, Olympic delivered an incredible performance where they were rarely troubled by APIA’s record setting attack.

Western Australia

Perth SC's 70th anniversary celebrations reached new heights on Saturday as they added the McInerney Ford Top Four Cup to their NPL WA title by defeating Perth Glory 4-1 in the final at Frank Drago Reserve.

The Azzurri had to come from behind after being 1-0 down at half time.

But they were outstanding in the second half, and none better than Paul Zimarino who received the Gary Marocchi Medal as man of the match after scoring a hat-trick and inspiring his side to victory.

Capital Football

Thomas James’ late brace helped Canberra FC edged Canberra Olympic 2-1.

Nathan Megic had put Olympic ahead midway through the opening half, but the comeback was completed when James struck the winner four minutes before full time.

Victoria

Oakleigh Cannons and Avondale prevailed in the NPL Victoria’s elimination finals round on the weekend.

The Cannons beat Pascoe Vale 2-1 on Friday evening while Avondale defeated Port Melbourne Sharks 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Queensland

Lions FC wrapped up a premiership and championship double winning season after defeating Olympic FC 2-1 after extra time.

Steve Whyte had opened the scoring early on for Olympic but a second half equaliser from Lions’ Nathan Reardon saw the match into extra time.

Prolific striker Marek Madle put the finishing touches on his brilliant season with a 95th minute winner.

Northern NSW

Broadmeadow Magic are NPL NNSW champions after defeating premiers Edgeworth Eagles 3-0 in the grand final on Saturday night.

Goals from John Majurovski, an own goal and an injury time strike from Kale Bradbery sealed a dominant display from Ruben Zadkovich’s side.
