Is this the end of the Kamsoba curse?

Livewire Melbourne Victory winger Elvis Kamsoba admitted he’d almost forgotten the pure joy of scoring goals, it had been that long since he found the back of the net.

Kamsoba joined Victory in January 2019 and had gone almost 2000 minutes of action without scoring a goal.

But he finally ended that long drought on Tuesday night, netting in the final minute of Victory's 5-0 AFC Champions League qualifying win over Bali United.

Sneaking in behind the Bali defence, Kamsoba coolly placed the ball past the keeper before letting his emotions out with an acrobatic forward flip.

It was pure relief for the 23-year-old, whose failings in front of goal seemed to haunt him the longer it went on.

“It’s been that long I lost the feeling, I didn’t know how to score anymore, so when I scored it felt good, I’m very happy,” Kamsoba said on Victory’s official website.

“I didn’t put pressure on myself, because people were telling me since last year I was going to get a goal, and then I just thought if I score, I score, if I don’t, I don’t .”

You would have forgiven Kamsoba for thinking he walked under a few ladders or encountered some black cats given a chance he missed in the first-half.

Getting on the end of a cross from the right, he headed an initial attempt against the post, before knocking the rebound onto the keeper and the woodwork again to stay out.

“Krusey was teasing me about it, he was saying that I’d been cursed,” Kamsoba said with a smile.

“It feels amazing because those people have been supporting me since I got to the club, and to score in front of them is something I won’t forget.

“Hopefully this opens up more goals for me.”

The win over the Indonesian champions has set up a winner-takes-all qualifier against Kashima Antlers in Japan next Tuesday for a spot in the 2020 ACL group stage.

But before that Victory have the rather significant matter of a Big Blue against Sydney FC at AAMI Park on Friday night.

Kamsoba hopes the big win in the ACL can act as a catalyst for a big improvement for the squad under new boss Carlos Salvachua.

“It’s always good to win. The boys should be confident heading into Friday night’s game (against Sydney FC),” he said.

“Hopefully we can get a win, and then fly to Japan and get a win on Tuesday.”
