Diamanti named Western United FC’s inaugural captain

Italian superstar Alessandro Diamanti has been unveiled as the inaugural captain of new Hyundai A-League club Western United FC.

Ahead of the club’s first-ever Hyundai A-League match on Sunday, Diamanti was confirmed as the new skipper by coach Mark Rudan on Wednesday morning.

“Since the first day of pre-season Alessandro has shown exceptional leadership qualities,” Rudan told Western United’s official website.

“He’s well-respected by all the coaching staff and the playing group. 

“Having played at the highest level at both club and country his experience will be a positive influence on our club in our first season.”

Diamanti is seen as a key signing for Rudan’s side as they embark on their maiden Hyundai A-League campaign.

The 36-year-old has played 17 times for the Italian national team, while his club career has seen him play for the likes of Fiorentina, Palermo, West Ham, Brescia and Bologna.

“I am very proud. It is a big responsibility,” Diamanti said of being the club captain.

“I will do my best for our club, our supporters, our staff.”

Diamanti will lead United out in their first Hyundai A-League match on Sunday against Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium.
