Corica: ‘There will be banter … it’s already started!’

Sydney FC head coach Steve Corica has revealed the family banter has already started after his club drew Cairns FC in the FFA Cup 2018 Round of 16.

Corica’s nephew Harry plies his trade for Cairns FC and it’s also a chance for the former Caltex Socceroo to return home, having been born and raised in Innisfail.

“It was what I wanted actually, it’s good, it’s where I’m from, my nephew plays for them and it’s great that we could get the draw to play them, it worked out perfectly,” Corica told sydneyfc.com after the draw.

“I know a little bit about them [Cairns FC], I don’t always get to look at them because I’m down here, but I hear from my brother and from my nephew.

“They’ve got some good players up there with a lot of pace, especially in the front line so it’s exciting.”

With the two clubs set to go head-to-head on Tuesday 21 August at Barlow Park, text messages have already begun flying in anticipation.

“I know they’re very excited about it, my family are very excited about it, and I’m very excited about it,” Corica said.

“Cairns are looking forward to it because they get to play the best team in the A-League and they’ll get a big crowd.

“There’ll be banter between the family, they’re Queenslanders but they go for us in the A-League.

“I’m not sure when we play them up there [who they’ll support] with my nephew playing for Cairns, but I’m sure there’ll be a bit of banter going on.

“It’s already started, my brother texted me straight away and said game on, but it’s all good.”
