City's 'three-peat' will never be repeated: Fishlock

Match-winner Jess Fishlock believes Melbourne City's incredible three-straight Westfield W-League titles is unlikely to ever be repeated.

Player-of-the-match Fishlock netted a stunning long-range strike and set-up City’s second as Patrick Kisnorbo’s side overpowered Sydney FC 2-0 in Sunday’s W-League Grand Final at Allianz Stadium.

And after securing an unprecedented W-League record, the Welsh playmaker paid tribute to City’s impact on women’s football in Australia and the magnitude of their achievement.

“I think you won’t realise it until 5-10 years because I don’t think this will ever be repeated,” Fishlock told Fox Sports.

“What Melbourne City have done for women’s football in this country is something that… people won’t accept it or appreciate it.

“They’re going to be bitter, they’re going to hate us. But to those people I just say look what it’s doing to the sport in your country.

“It’s bringing it on ten-fold. You don’t have to like Melbourne City but respect the girls. Respect what the girls have achieved because it won’t happen again.”

After a nervy opening, a disciplined City outfit kept the Sky Blues at bay and took their chances in either half with Fishlock and Jodie Taylor grabbing the decisive goals.

Fishlock praised Sydney’s endeavour in the decider but was thrilled with her side’s gritty performance away from home.

“It’s fantastic. It was hard. Sydney are a fantastic team and we knew that today was going to be extremely hard for us,” Fishlock said.

“We knew the qualities that they have but we knew we could hurt them and that’s what we did today.

“I have nothing but pride and love for this group of girls.”
