Chidiac and Atletico Madrid on the cusp of third straight Liga Femenina title

Westfield Matildas starlet Alex Chidiac is on the brink of La Liga Femenina glory with Atletico Madrid.

Chidiac’s Atletico require a point from Sunday evening’s (9pm kick-off AEST) trip to sixth-placed Sociedad to seal their third straight league title.

Second-placed Barcelona need to beat Granadilla Tenerife and hope Atleti lose in order to make up the current three-point deficit and steal the title away on the final day.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Spanish giants on July 2018, relocating more than 17,500km away to become the first Australian to play for Madrid.

Formerly of Adelaide United and Melbourne City – with whom she was a Westfield W-League double winner in the club’s inaugural 2015/16 campaign – Chidiac has scored three goals in 19 appearances this season.

Atleti, coached by Jose Luis Sanchez, also have a Copa de la Reina (Women’s Spanish Cup) final to look forward to - also against Sociedad - on May 12, kick-off 4:30am AEST.

They took out that title in 2015/16 but have lost the Cup final in each of the last two years.
