Castro to share the load as 'proud' new Perth Glory captain

Diego Castro expects to "grow and develop" as a leader at Perth Glory after Tony Popovic entrusted him with the captaincy for the new Hyundai A-League season.

The vastly experienced ex-Getafe winger will wear the armband on a permanent basis following an announcement at the Glory in Business event on Wednesday.

An established star and former Johnny Warren Medal Winner, 36-year-old Castro says his approach won't change amid Perth's push to get back into the Finals Series.

"It's a big honour and a responsibility at the same time, but I'm taking that responsibility with all the support of my team-mates and the coaching staff," the Spaniard told his club's official website.

"It's a positive thing in my career and I'm ready for the new challenge.

"I've been a captain before a couple of times in my career and this will be an experience that will help me grow and develop.

"I've always tried to lead by example and suggest advice to the younger players.

"We have lots of experienced players and staff who can help with this."

Glory boss Popovic cited the long-serving Castro as a standout candidate to captain the club he joined in 2015.

"Diego was a natural choice," he said. "During the three seasons that he has spent here at Perth Glory, he has been a leader on and off the field.

"We are fortunate to have a strong leadership group in the squad which will be a great benefit for us throughout the exciting journey that lies ahead."
