Campbelltown City and Lions lock up NPL Finals Series Semi Finals spots

Campbelltown City powered in to the final four of the NPL Finals Series and were joined by Lions FC, who will play Heidelberg United in the Semi Finals.

The Adelaide-based side took the initiate against their ACT opposition when a first-half goal from Alex Mullen gave the Red Devils the advantage at the break.

The hosts battled hard to find a way back into the game but Lui Ditroia’s 78th-minute finish gave Campbelltown a cushion, before Ditroai doubled his tally in stoppage time to wrap up a convincing 3-0 win.

Marek Madle’s fourth-minute strike was enough for Lions FC to set up a semi-final clash with Heidelberg United.

The Queenslanders struck early against the Edgeworth Eagles in their elimination final and Madle almost doubled the lead on the half hour but he was denied at point-blank range.

Nathan Shepherd came close to doubling the lead after the interval before Lions survived a scare when the Eagles had a late goal chalked off for offside.

The Eagles were reduced to ten men when Dan McBreen saw a red card for a dangerous challenge on Lions goalkeeper Luke Borean and Lions shut their opponents down to seal a place in the semi-finals.

Heidelberg came through a tight game in a 3-2 win against Devonport Strikers last week, and will travel to face Lions FC at Lions Stadium in Richlands, Queensland on Tuesday, 18 September at 7.30pm.

Campbelltown City will face the winners of Sydney Olympic against Perth SC in the other Semi Final.
