Cahill and Meredith stay in Championship play-off picture

Caltex Socceroos Tim Cahill and James Meredith remain on track for the Championship play-offs despite being held to a draw at Sheffield United on Saturday night (AEST).

In a crucial clash against their fellow promotion hopefuls, the Lions came away with a crucial point after a 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane.

Leon Clarke gave the home side the lead with 16 minutes left but it took just two minutes for Millwall to hit back, with Steve Morison responding for Neil Harris’ side.

Meredith against started at left-back and played a full match for the Lions, while Cahill was an unused substitute.

Millwall remain in sixth position – the final play-off spot – but are just one point ahead of Derby County, who also have a game in hand.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Massimo Luongo’s QPR slumped to a 2-1 defeat at home against Preston North End.

QPR took an early lead through Matt Smith but were pegged back by the visitors, with Luongo getting through a full 90 minutes at Loftus Road.

Jackson Irvine was an unused substitute for Hull City as they also suffered defeat, going down 1-0 against Sheffield Wednesday.

And the promotion hopes of Bailey Wright’s Bristol City appear over after they went down 2-1 against Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Wright was absent for the Robins due to injury and they certainly missed his defensive organisation and desperation.

Bristol has dropped to 11th spot, four points outside the top six with just three games left.

Meanwhile, Trent Sainsbury played 90 minutes for Grasshopper Zurich in Switzerland, as they lost 2-1 at home against St Gallen.

And in the Netherlands, Craig Goodwin and Kenny Dougall’s Sparta Rotterdam appear destined for the dreaded drop in the Eredivisie.

On a forgettable night for the Aussie duo, they both played the full 90 minutes in a 7-0 loss at Vitesse.
