Brad Smith's journey so far to celebrate his birthday

To marks Brad Smith's 26th birthday, we take a look at some of his best moments for the Socceroos as well as some of his club highlights.

There have been plenty of highs throughout Smith’s career, from making his debut for the Socceroos in 2014 to becoming the first Australian to lift the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup with Seattle Sounders last year.

The breakthrough: Liverpool and the Socceroos

Smith entered the Socceroos fold in an international friendly against Belgium shortly after the FIFA World Cup 2014 - filling the void at left back in the national side.

The Sydney born defender had caught the eye of the green and gold after a string of impressive performances in the Liverpool youth set up, which culminated in a first team debut for the Premier League outfit at the end of 2013.

Smith would later depart Liverpool in 2016 after signing with Bournemouth in the English top-flight.

Socceroos mainstay

Smith became a regular for the Socceroos in 2016. The young defender made 13 consecutive appearances, playing the full 90 minutes in six of Australia’s FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers.

At 22 years old, Smith was a regular fixture in the Socceroos starting eleven and quickly became one of the lynchpins in the national team.

Smith was also a part of a Socceroos side which recorded quite an incredible feat, in remaining undefeated in eight successive FIFA World Cup qualifiers throughout 2016 and 2017, with the left back playing an integral role in every one of those matches.

Placing his name in MLS history

The Socceroos defender etched his name into the history books last year when he became the first Australian to lift the MLS Cup trophy with Seattle Sounders while on loan from Bournemouth.

Smith became a household name with the Sounders and was an instant hit with the fans throughout his time in the United States.

His cracking form for Seattle has seen him return to the fold for the national team. He was selected in the Socceroos’ latest round of qualifiers in September/October last year.

The defender was also able to register his first assist for the Socceroos in their 7-1 triumph against Chinese Taipei.

At the end of January 2019, Smith joined Championship side Cardiff City on loan for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

There are already many highlights to call upon in Smith’s career and there will undoubtedly be more as he looks to continue what has been an incredible career.
