Awer Mabil's emotional tribute after scoring to seal first Danish league Championship

Awer Mabil paid tribute to his teammates, coaches, fans and late sister after a becoming a league Champion with his Danish club FC Midtjylland for the first time.

The Socceroos attacker scored his side’s third goal in their 3-1 comeback win over FC Copenhagen to seal FC Midtjylland’s third league title in six years.

Following the 24-year-old’s eighth goal of the campaign - to go with his seven assists in 30 games in the Superliga - he praised everyone who helped him on his path to silverware in Denmark.

“It's (the feeling) hard to describe. It's emotionally charged, but it's good emotion, so it's just about enjoying it,” said Mabil after the game.

“It's always nice to score and it makes it even better to win a championship. I'm really grateful for the amazing team we have. Nothing would happen without this team, these coaches and these fans, so we all deserve this moment."

He added: “It was my (late) sister's birthday a couple of days ago. It's also for her. It means everything. I have been relegated two times and now I am a champion."

Mabil was also excited at the prospect of being able to play UEFA Champions League football with FC Midtjylland next season.

After sealing top spot on the Superliga table through an unassailable 17 point lead with four matches to play, Mabil and his side will enter the second qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League.

"It is a dream to play in the Champions League and we will do everything to play in the Champions League, so that is our next goal," he said.

“I’m here now and I want to be here next season because I want to play the Champions League.”
