Awer Mabil makes first UEFA Champions League appearance

Thursday morning (AEDT), marked a quite special achievement in Awer Mabil’s career as his childhood dream of UEFA Champions League football became a reality when he featured for Midtjylland in their first group stage encounter at home to Atalanta.

Both a personal and club milestone were achieved as Mabil and his Midtjylland participated in the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

The road to Europe’s pinnacle competition began just under two months ago in Bulgaria when his side saw off Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0.

They have since gone on to claim a 3-0 victory against Swiss side Young Boys before overcoming Czech outfit Slavia Prague in a two-legged playoff which in turn sealed their qualification into the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Their first foray into the Champions League began this morning, however it did not go as planned as they were humbled 4-0 by Atalanta.

The Italians gave the Danish champions a masterclass in finishing as they raced to a 3-0 lead by the interval.

The Aussie winger started the historic match and lasted 75 minutes but was unable to have the desired impact against the Bergamo based outfit who reached the quarter-finals in last season’s edition of the tournament.

The heavy defeat sees Mabil’s side prop up the table after the first matchday with their next European adventure set to take place at the home of English champions Liverpool - who recorded a 1-0 win at Ajax in their opening fixture.
