Aussies Abroad Wrap: Luongo scores winner, Rukavytsya fires 20th of season

Nikita Rukavytsya scored his 20th league goal for Maccabi Haifa in the Israeli Premier League while Massimo Luongo was on target for Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship on Sunday.

Trent Sainsbury and Nikita Rukavytsya secured their third win on the bounce in the Israeli Premier League as their Maccabi Haifa overcame Hapoel Be’er Sheva 2-1 on Saturday.

Rukavytsya scored his 20th goal of the league season when he opened the scoring thanks to his 12th minute strike before Be’er Sheva went a man down after they had a player sent off four minutes later.

Despite going a man down, they still managed to restore parity shortly after the break however Maccabi’s second goal just after the hour mark proved to be the match winner.

In the English Championship, Massimo Luongo fired in the winning goal for Sheffield Wednesday as they won 2-1 at Bristol City.

Luongo’s goal arrived on the hour mark after his close range shot sailed past Robins goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa before settling into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Brad Smith was an unused substitute for Cardiff City as they ran out 3-1 winners against playoff rivals Preston North End on Saturday.

In the Korean K League, Brandon O’Neill played the full game for Pohang Steelers as they secured a 2-0 win away to Gwangju FC on Friday night.

Jason Davidson was absent for Ulsan Hyundai as they fell to a 2-0 defeat in their top of the table affair against Jeonbuk FC.

Ulsan played the majority of the contest a man down after centre back Kim Kee-hee was given his marching orders on 27 minutes.

It proved to be another unhappy outing for Adam Taggart and Terry Antonis as their Suwon Bluewings suffered a 1-0 defeat against Sangju Sangmu on Sunday night.

Taggart started the match and lasted for 64 minutes while Antonis entered the action in the 69th minute.

In Danish Superligaen action, Awer Mabil played a full game for Midtjylland as they triumphed 2-1 against FC Kobenhavn.

Mabil had a stellar performance which was capped off with an assist as he set up Lasse Vibe for his side’s winning goal.


Alex Gersbach came on for the final eight minutes for AGF Aarhus as they suffered a 4-1 defeat against Aalborg.

On Saturday in the Austrian Bundesliga, James Jeggo put in a full shift for Austria Wien as they went down 5-2 to SKN St. Poelten.

James Holland played a full game for LASK Linz as they lost 1-0 to Wolfsberger thanks to a penalty in the dying moments of the encounter.

Brandon Borrello and Mathew Leckie featured for their respective clubs in the final matchday of the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign on Saturday.

Borrello was an unused substitute for SC Freiburg as they ended their season on a high with a 4-0 thrashing of Schalke 04.

Freiburg finished the season in 8th place, just one place out of the highly coveted European spots.

Leckie was introduced just after half time for Hertha Berlin as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Berlin end the campaign in 10th position, on the same amount of points as bitter rivals Union Berlin however Hertha’s superior goal difference ensured that they earned the bragging rights this season.

In the Turkish SuperLig, Aziz Behich was an unused substitute for Istanbul Basaksehir as they drew 1-1 at home to Galatasaray overnight.
