Aussies Abroad Wrap: Mixed fortunes for Championship Socceroos

It was an eventful weekend for our Socceroos based in England with a couple of midfielders particularly impressing for their clubs.

It's Monday, which means it's time for us to wrap up all of the weekend's Aussies Abroad action!

We're coming home tickets

It was a top weekend at the office for both Kenny Dougall and Riley McGree, who played important roles as their clubs came away with important victories.

For Dougall, a solid shift in the centre of the park helped Blackpool to a third-straight victory, prevailing 1-0 away to Sheffield United.

After an up-and-down start to the season, the newly-promoted Seasiders have quietly built up a solid run of form, and now sit sixth with 15 matches played.

It has been a similar story for McGree's Birmingham, who are slowly but surely working their way up the Championship ladder - with the Socceroos youngster among those at the core of their rise.

McGree was handed another start in the centre of the park during the Blues' 2-0 win away to Middlebrough, which has them now sitting 14th in the league.

On the other hand, Halloween weekend sprung up a horror result for Harry Souttar's Stoke City, who gave up a 3-0 lead in the second half to draw 3-3 at home to struggling Cardiff. It was also another difficult outing for Callum Elder's Hull City, who fell 1-0 at home to Coventry City.

Bailey Wright will also be looking to forget this weekend as soon as possible, after being introduced halfway through Sunderland's 5-1 defeat to Rotherham.

On a brighter note, the Socceroos defender has a glamour League Cup tie to look forward to, with the Black Cats drawn against Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

Moving to Germany, where Ajdin Hrustic started and played an hour for Eintracht Frankfurt as they took on RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

A 94th-minute equaliser was enough for Hrustic's side to come away with a 1-1 draw.

After playing a tough 120 minutes in the Cup midweek, Jackson Irvine was introduced as a second-half substitute in St. Pauli's 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen.

While it saw their win streak come to an end, the result maintains a one-point lead on top of the 2. Bundesliga with 12 games played.

It was a similar story for Denis Genreau in France, as he was subbed on in the 58th minute of Toulouse's 2-2 draw with Guingamp.

Toulouse also remain in pole position for promotion, one point clear of Sochaux after 14 rounds.

In Belgium, Trent Sainsbury played 90 minutes as KV Kortrijk drew 1-1 away to Standard Liege, while in the second tier, Daniel Arzani again started for Lommel as they lost 3-2 to RWD Molenbeek.

Finally, Jimmy Jeggo played an hour for Aris Thessalonki in Greece as they were defeated 2-1 by AEK Athens away from home, while it was a tough result for Lawrence Thomas in net for SønderjyskE, as they shipped six to Silkeborg.
