Aussies Abroad: Sydney FC’s Foord eying NWSL Championship game with Portland Thorns

Caitlin Foord is aiming to fire Portland Thorns into their third straight National Women’s Soccer League Championship game on Monday morning AEDT.

The Sydney FC signing for the 2019/20 Westfield W-League season has scored three goals in 17 appearances for the two-time NWSL Champions in the 2019 season.

Thorns travel to Chicago Red Stars seeking to prevent the hosts from making the NWSL Championship game for the first time.

The second and third placed teams played out a thrilling 4-4 draw in April, before Portland took the ascendancy at Providence Park with a 3-0 home win against Chicago in June.

That loss sparked a run of five straight wins for the Red Stars, outscoring their opponents 12 goals to two during that stretch.

It has been two years since the Thorns lifted the NWSL Championship, when they clinched a 1-0 Grand Final win over Courage, and the visitors bring the big-game pedigree to Bridgeview, Illinois.

Only once before have Chicago hosted a Semi Final, a 2015 3-0 loss to FC Kansas City.

The spotlight shines again on the Windy City as Portland travel to SeatGeek Stadium in a match that kicks off at 6.30am AEDT on Monday.
