Aussies Abroad: Rogic, Vukovic feature in UEFA Europa League

Celtic’s hot run of form continued in the UEFA Europa League on Friday morning (AEDT), as Caltex Socceroos star Tom Rogic helped his side to a 2-1 victory over Red Bull Leipzig in Glasgow.

The Scottish Premiership outfit made it four wins from four with the success, a result that keeps their hopes of progressing from the group stages of Europe’s second-tier club competition alive.

Brendan Rodgers’ side entered the clash knowing defeat would essentially dash those ambitions, with Celtic already three points adrift of the German side.

But Celtic moved level on points with the second-placed Red Bull Leipzig with the triumph, which came courtesy of Odsonne Edouard’s 79th-minute winner.

Edouard’s goal came just one minute after Leipzig levelled through Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Of all the midfielders on the pitch, only two made more passes than Rogic’s tally of 35.

The 25-year-old Australian also played the full 90 minutes.

Victory for Celtic marked the first time they have won three consecutive home games in Europe - excluding qualifiers - since the group stages of the UEFA Champions League 2007/08.

Celtic go to Rosenborg later this month and will be full of confidence with the Norwegian side yet to win a point from four UEFA Europa League matches.

And that clash could see a reunion between two Caltex Socceroos, with defender Alex Gersbach a member of the Rosenborg set up.

Coached by ex-Adelaide United boss Rini Coolen, Rosenborg suffered a 5-2 home defeat to Red Bull Salzburg on Friday, with Gersbach an unused substitute.

Caltex Socceroos goalkeeper Danny Vukovic was in action on UEFA Europa League matchday four, too.

His Genk side came from behind to snatch a 1-1 home draw with Besiktas in Group I.

Sander Berge scored Genk’s goal with three minutes to play as the Belgian outfit remained on top of their group.
