Aussies Abroad Preview: Stakes are high in Kerr’s first London derby

Sam Kerr enters her first London derby knowing a win against Arsenal would ignite Chelsea’s title aspirations.

The third-placed Blues are four points behind the Gunners, and one point behind Manchester City, with a game in hand on each, ahead of the crunch showdown at 1am AEDT on Monday, 20 January.

Three points at Meadow Park in Kerr’s fourth match since relocating to England would see head coach Emma Hayes’ side gain control of the Women’s Super League Championship race.

Chelsea already hold one victory over former Westfield W-League coach Joe Montemurro’s side, a 2-1 come-from-behind home win back in October, which is still the only points Arsenal have dropped from 12 matches this campaign.

Hayley Raso’s Everton face Reading at home at the same time but the Toffees’ newest signing will not be available until after the Westfield Matildas’ Olympic Games qualifying bid in February.

Jacynta Galabadaarachchi and West Ham United are one spot behind seventh-placed Everton and face ninth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion at Rush Green Stadium at 2am AEDT on Monday.

In Spain, Atletico Madrid travel to face Sevilla at 11pm AEDT on Sunday seeking to haul in runaway Primera Division Feminina leaders FC Barcelona.

Alex Chidiac has not been included in the past two squads but the 17-cap Westfield Matilda will hope to be involved as the second-placed side go up against the team in 11th spot.

Across in Italy, Lisa De Vanna and Fiorentina square off against Florentia in the Women’s Serie A at 10.30pm AEDT on Sunday.

La Viola have won four straight to rise to second in the Italian ladder, six points back from Juventus, ahead of their match with the seventh-placed outfit.
