Aussies Abroad Preview: Duo clash, perfect K League record aim

Another blockbuster weekend awaits with a number of Aussies set to feature across the Bundesliga and K League.

The first of our Aussie stars will be in action on Friday night at 8:30pm* as Brandon O’Neill’s Pohang Steelers welcome FC Seoul to the Steelyard Stadium.

The Steelers have recorded a win and a draw from their first two K League encounters with O’Neill on hand to set up his side’s goal in their 1-1 draw against Daegu last weekend.

Pohang are third on the league table while Seoul occupy sixth position heading into this fixture after they suffered a loss in their season opener against Gangwon FC.

All eyes will be on Mathew Leckie’s Hertha Berlin as they prepare to go head to head with cross-town rivals FC Union Berlin at the Olympiastadion on Saturday morning at 4:30am.

Leckie was not included in Hertha’s matchday squad last time out, which saw them claim a 3-0 victory away to Hoffenheim.

Their upcoming clash with Union is finely poised with Hertha currently sitting in 11th spot on the table with 31 points - one point and one place above their fierce rivals.

Two Aussies will face off against one another in the K League on Saturday as Adam Taggart’s Suwon Bluewings host Rashid Mahazi’s Incheon United with kick off scheduled for 5:30pm. Terry Antonis will not be a part of the Bluewings’ matchday squad as he completes the final game of his two match suspension.

Suwon have endured an underwhelming start to their campaign with two defeats in their first two fixtures.

Taggart will be hoping to return to the starting line-up this weekend after he was only introduced on the hour mark in last week’s loss to Ulsan.

Incheon have recorded back-to-back 0-0 stalemates to start their season and sit one place above their hosts in 9th position ahead of this weekend’s meeting.

Returning to the German top flight and Brandon Borrello will be hoping to lace up his boots for SC Freiburg when they face off against Werder Bremen on Saturday night at 11:30pm at the Schwarzwald Stadion.

Freiburg return home after taking a point from their trip to Leipzig last Saturday, however Borrello was not a part of coach Christian Streich’s plans that day.

Borrello will be hoping to play a role against strugglers Bremen this time around as his side continue their quest for European football next year – they currently sit in 7th position on the ladder, just outside the coveted top six European spots.

Jason Davidson and his Ulsan side will wrap up round three proceedings in the Korean top flight when they meet promoted outfit Busan I’Park at the Ulsan Munsu Stadium at 8pm on Sunday night.

Davidson has enjoyed an amazing start to the K League season, he has played every minute throughout his side’s first two league matches of the season which has seen them enjoy successive victories.

Ulsan are top of the league heading into this fixture while their opponents languish in 11th position after suffering consecutive defeats.
