Aussies Abroad: New role for Mooy in first PL start for Brighton

Aaron Mooy made his first Premier League start for Brighton and Hove Albion as the Seagulls were held 0-0 by Newcastle United on Sunday morning.

The 29-year-old midfielder - a loan signing from Huddersfield Town on transfer window deadline day - was fielded on the left of a front three containing Neal Maupay and Pascal Gross by Brighton boss Graham Potter.

It was a role not too dissimilar to some of Mooy's playing days in the Hyundai A-League with Melbourne City, and the Australian star relished the more advanced position.

He fizzed a shot wide of the post on the half hour mark and made several eye-catching passes before his withdrawal for Aaron Connolly in the 69th minute.

Mathew Ryan marshalled the defence with usual verve but was rarely troubled between the posts, with Brighton dominating possession and chances at St. James Park.

The Seagulls saw Steven Alzate's first half header ruled out for offside, while Newcastle defender Fabian Schar produced a stunning goal line clearance from Connolly late on as Brighton extended their unbeaten Premier League run against the Magpies to five games - their joint-best record.

Irvine on song for Hull

Jackson Irvine helped orchestrate a dominant 3-0 win for Hull City against Luton Town in the Championship.

The Australian midfielder - who selected the club's pre-match player playlist (see his selection of tunes below) - played 85 minutes and created two excellent chances for Polish attacker Kamil Grosicki to score, and headed over a cross himself from Eric Lichaj.

He was substituted to an ovation late in the day, as the Tigers moved 14th thanks to goals from Grosicki, Kevin Stewart and an own goal from Dan Potts.

A late equaliser from Atdhe Nuhiu spared Massimo Luongo's Sheffield Wednesday a point against Fulham in the Championship.

Nuhiu salvaged a 1-1 draw in the third minute of stoppage time, cancelling out Tom Cairney's 42nd minute opener, as Luongo remained an unused substitute at Hillsborough.

Milligan guides Shrimpers to first win

Mark Milligan helped Southend United shock MK Dons 1-0 and secure their first three points of the League One campaign.

Milligan played 90 heroic minutes in a true backs-to-the-wall performance from the Shrimpers, who took the lead in the fourth minute through Charlie Kelman.

Harry Souttar was also victorious in League One with his Fleetwood Town side beating Rochdale 2-1 thanks to Ched Evans' late header.

Souttar played 90 minutes, as Joey Barton's men moved into fourth spot.

Best ever Bundesliga start for Borrello's Freiburg

Brandon Borrello's Freiburg secured a 1-1 draw against Augsburg to seal the club's best-ever start to a Bundesliga season.

Borrello was absent for the side, who are now third on the ladder following the draw.

Also in the Bundesliga, Mathew Leckie's Hertha Berlin beat Paderborn 2-1 to earn their first win of the campaign and leapfrog their opponents off the bottom of the ladder, although the Australian was not in the match day squad.

Hrustic on target

Ajdin Hrustic's fine Eredivisie form continued with another goal for Groningen in their 2-0 win over Zwolle.

Hrustic had found the scoresheet with a stunning goal in his side's 2-1 loss to VVV Venlo last time out and did so again on the hour mark with a calm finish - his third goal of the season.

In the K-League, Adam Taggart's Suwon Bluewings drew 1-1 with Sangju Sangmu.

The result keeps Taggart's side in sixth position, and on course for a championship round spot.
