Aussies Abroad: Mooy’s superb brace lifts Huddersfield Town

Caltex Socceroos maestro Aaron Mooy was at the double this morning, grabbing a brace to help Huddersfield Town defeat Wolves 2-0 in this morning’s Premier League clash (AEDT).

Mooy broke the deadlock in the first half with a lovely controlled strike from outside the area before expertly bending a 74th minute free-kick past Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio to seal a vital three points for the Terriers.

The 28-year-old’s man of the match-winning performance lifts David Wagner’s side out of the bottom three and into 14th on the Premier League table.

Wagner was full of praise for the Australian after the match, hailing his talismanic influence for the West Yorkshire club.

“Aaron Mooy is a top-class player, he has this calmness on the ball. His decision-making was great,” said Wagner.

“You will rarely find a player with such good technique and vision who is prepared to work so hard for the team.

“His work for the team is something extraordinary. We are very happy to have him in our team.”

Mooy’s brace is the first time any Huddersfield player has scored more than one goal in a single Premier League match since he did so himself against Watford back in December 2017.

Moreover, the Terrier’s two-goal triumph is the first time they’ve scored more than one goal in a Premier League game for 23 fixtures – since February.

In Denmark, Awer Mabil’s FC Midtjylland suffered a 2-1 defeat in their top of the table Danish Superliga clash at Copenhagen.

With four goals and eight assists, Mabil has so often been the architect for the Jutland-based outfit this season.

But the Caltex Socceroos flyer was unable to inspire his side on his 66-minute cameo. The result means Copenhagen leapfrog Midtjylland into pole position on the league table.

Elsewhere in Europe, Tomi Juric came on late in the day as Luzern held FC Basel to a 1-1 draw at home, while Matt Jurman’s Al-Ittihad went down 3-1 to Al Ahli in their Saudi Pro League clash.
