Aussies Abroad: Mooy, Ryan help Brighton come back to rescue point at Sheffield United

Mat Ryan and Aaron Mooy played key roles as Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a valuable point against Premier League high-flyers Sheffield United.

Socceroos number one Ryan made a crucial save at close range to deny Blades record signing Ollie McBurnie on 59 minutes, and made another stop from the Scotsman late on to keep the scores locked at 1-1 at Bramall Lane.

Aussie playmaker Mooy had hauled the Seagulls back into the game against the competition’s sixth-placed side when his lofted free-kick was flicked on by Adam Webster and Neal Maupay nodded in the equaliser in the 30th minute.

The away side’s reprieve arrived four minutes after United left-back Enda Stevens had lashed in a rocket strike from the edge of the area to hand the Premier League’s surprise packets the advantage.

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk missed a golden chance to snatch a win for Graham Potter’s side, who hover four points above the drop zone in 15th place, and Potter praised his team’s character in adversity.

"We came back from two goals down in our last away match [against West Ham], and came from behind again,” he said. "The resilience of the group is fine but we have to show more quality with the ball."
