Aussies Abroad: Mabil's goal edges Midtjylland closer to UEFA Champions League, Duke debuts for Saudi club

Awer Mabil helped FC Midtjylland progress into the next stage of Champions League qualifiers after he scored the third goal in their 3-0 win against Swiss side Young Boys while Mitch Duke made his long-awaited debut for Al-Taawoun.

Awer Mabil was on hand to score Midtjylland’s third goal of the evening as they cruised past Swiss outfit Young Boys with a 3-0 win in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

His goal arrived in the 83rd minute when he beat the offside trap after being played in by an expertly struck through ball from Pione Sisto.

The Midtjylland winger forced a save from the Young Boys shot stopper with his first attempt but made no mistake with the follow up.

The Danish champions have one more hurdle before they secure their place in the UEFA Champions League group stage with a meeting against Czech side Slavia Prague set to decide whether they will feature in Europe’s premier competition.

It was a night to forget for Milos Degenek’s FK Crvena Zvezda after they lost on penalties to Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia in their UEFA Champions League qualifier.

The score was locked at 1-1 after extra time and it was the Cypriot outfit who sealed their place in the playoffs after they triumphed 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

Mitch Duke made his debut for Saudi club Al-Taawoun as they resumed their AFC Asian Champions League campaign in Qatar on Wednesday morning.

Duke put in a full shift up front as his new side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Iranian outfit Persepolis.

Al-Taawoun still sit top of the group despite the loss and will be looking to get revenge when they face off against Persepolis again on Saturday morning.

Heading to the K League where Adam Taggart came on for the final 19 minutes for Suwon Bluewings as they played out a 0-0 stalemate against Pohang Steelers on Wednesday night.

Taggart’s side sit in 11th position on the table with one round remaining and could finish last if results don’t go their way in the final matchday this Sunday.

Meanwhile, Massimo Luongo was absent for Sheffield Wednesday as they saw off Rochdale 2-0 in the EFL Cup on Wednesday morning.
