Aussies Abroad: Mabil fires FC Midtjylland to open up lead in Denmark

Socceroos forward Awer Mabil netted his sixth goal of the Danish SuperLiga season as FC Midtjylland raced to victory against Lyngby.

The competition leaders opened up a seven-point lead at the top of ladder with the 2-0 win, after defending champions FC Copenhagen lost 1-0 at Esbjerg fB on Saturday.

Anders Dreyer opened the scoring for the Wolves on the half hour mark at MCH Arena and Mabil put the seal on the three-point gain when the 24-year-old struck in the 72nd minute.

FC Copenhagen pipped Mabil’s FC Midtjylland to lift the trophy by a single point in 2018/19, denying the Socceroos attacker a first league winner’s medal.

Mabil’s sixth goal of the campaign ties his best ever goal return for a league season after only 19 matches for the two-time Danish champions in 2019/20.

He netted six in 30 matches in 2018/19 and also scored six goals in 21 matches for Adelaide United in the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League season before sealing a move to Denmark in July 2015.
