Aussies Abroad: Kerr scores to edge closer to NWSL record

Westfield Matildas captain Sam Kerr is one step closer to etching her name into the National Women’s Soccer League history books again.

Kerr scored her 16th goal of the NWSL campaign in Chicago Red Stars’ 3-0 win over Sky Blue FC on Monday morning AEST.

The 26-year-old forward needs one more goal to equal the league record of 17 that Kerr herself set for Sky Blue in 2017, a season that also saw the Australian named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

She is also closing in on a hat-trick of NWSL Golden Boot wins, having also claimed the 2018 award. Kerr is five goals ahead of North Carolina Courage’s Lynn Williams (11) on the standings.

Chicago trail the Courage by two points with two matches remaining, but 2018 double-winners North Carolina have an extra two games in hand.

Although North Carolina are zeroing in on their third straight NWSL Shield win, the race for the Final series is still very much alive for several Westfield Matildas.

It looked as though Chloe Logarzo had given Washington Spirit’s top four hopes a huge boost with a 90th minute goal against Reign FC – only for her side to concede an equaliser in the second minute of injury time.

Logarzo had entered the fray as a 64th minute substitute and thought she’d won the match with a composed finish past Reign 'keeper Casey Murphy in the dying seconds of normal time.

However, Ifeoma Onumonu levelled things in the second minute of stoppage time. The result does neither side any favours – Washington are six point away from fourth-placed Utah Royals, while fifth-placed Reign are level on 31 points with the club from Salt Lake City.

Australian vice-captain Steph Catley played the full 90 minutes from left back, while Amy Harrison came on for Washington with five minute of regular time remaining. Elise Kellond-Knight was absent for the hosts.

Elsewhere in America's top flight, Alanna Kennedy played the full 90 minutes as North Carolina moved closer to the title with a 6-1 win over Orlando Pride.
