Aussies abroad: Jedinak’s Villa confirm Championship play-off spot

Caltex Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak played 90 minutes as Aston Villa confirmed their spot in the EFL Championship play-offs with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United.

Villa are currently in fourth position as the Championship season draws to an exciting conclusion, with Jedinak guaranteed to feature in Steve Bruce’s side’s push for promotion.

There were fireworks in the German second division as Robbie Kruse and Brandon Borrello squared off in Bochum’s encounter with Kaiserslautern.

Kruse’s Bochum emerged with a 3-2 victory in an entertaining affair that sees Kaiserslautern remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Borrello was substituted late in the match as Kaiserslautern searched for an equalizer.

Danny Vukovic featured between the sticks as Genk drew 2-2 with Sporting Charleroi in the Belgian title playoffs and came close to saving an early penalty from Charleroi forward Kaveh Rezaei.

The result leaves Vukovic’s side in fifth position with five matches remaining.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for young defender Aleks Susnjar who was sent off after 82 minutes for Mladá Boleslav in their 1-1 stalemate with Teplice in the Czech Lifa.

The red card is the third of Susnjar’s career and leaves Mladá Boleslav in ninth position with five rounds of the season remaining.

Alex Gersbach enjoyed better fortunes for Lens in their 2-2 draw with Niort in Ligue 2.

The former Sydney FC defender played the full match for Lens who are in 15th position as the French second division nears its end.
